Hi Moms and Dads!

The children have returned to class, we wish them success in school, but how can we help them to achieve it? Success begins at home, with a good night's rest, a balanced diet and a genuine effort to support them in their homework and school projects. Sometimes, we hesitate on helping them because we honestly don't understand the process, and at times, instead of helping them, we end up confusing them. That should not prevent us from providing support, even if we do not understand the concepts; there are many ways to contribute to the academic success of our children.

Take the time to attend the open house that is scheduled in the first weeks of the school year.

Yesterday, I went to my son's school, I met all his teachers and found out about their expectations, but also, I learned about the help available for my son at school if he needs extra help on any subject; teachers and tutors are available before and after school to support him; most of the schools have a similar system in place, find out what your child ‘school has to offer in that area. Public libraries have tutoring hours to assist elementary and middle school students.

Another way to get involved in the education of our children is to attend parent conferences, and getting to know how to navigate the school communication system; in most districts there is a virtual portal for parents where we can see daily or weekly assignments, school projects, teacher notes, as well as their attendance and grades. Attending parent meetings or being members of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) gives us the opportunity to contribute  ideas on how to increase their academic performance, or to request improvements in structures, implement bilingual education, organize field trips, and many other things that would have a direct impact on the students achievements. We can also volunteer in the classrooms, serve as chaperones in school events, or contribute with our skills and abilities in any task requested.

The article Getting Involved at Your Child's School provides other practical ways to be proactive and engaged in the education of our children, and the benefits that come from it. (Ben-Joseph, 2018).

To balance school and work responsibilities, you have to participate in fun and relaxing activities as a family; this week there are a wide variety of musical events such as karaokejazzcountry music, and rock; as well as an art exhibition, or you can learn about summer crops and taste fruits and vegetables, take the children to swim, to an art class, to the library  to listen to stories, or attend a workshopon positive discipline.

In any activity you choose, FIND YOUR FAMILY FUN!

Until next Friday!
