ADVENTURE: Feeding the ducks at Ellis Lake
COST: $0
TOTAL TIME 1 hr
This week's adventure is one I am sure that everyone in the Yuba- Sutter area knows about, but if you are anything like me, forgets about often! This week we went to Ellis Lake in Marysville to feed the ducks and take a fun walk around the lake. Its one of those places that we see all the time in our travels and when we finally take the time to stop and get out I think to myself “why don't we do this more often!”
Ellis Lake is a man made lake that was created in the 1930's and is surrounded by a walking path and greenery. There are plenty of ducks and geese around to feed, a quaint gazebo, and monument of an old pump along the path. While you will find those who call Ellis Lake dirty and an unattractive sight in Marysville, every time that I have been it has been a wonderful day out with the kids! No, I wouldn't suggest swimming in it, but to go and walk around, or to feed the ducks, I think that it is a true treasure for our community, and I always leave feeling glad that we went!
This week was no exception! Its a wonderful time of year to go to Ellis Lake, as there are lots of baby duckling in the pond to see! We saw three separate groups of ducklings, ranging in different ages with one group looking as though they where only a few days old! They where adorable! And it was great to show my preschool aged son the ducklings and talk about how ducklings hatch out of eggs, and to point out to him how they all swam in a line behind the mother duck. The rest of our walk around the lake, he wanted to sing “5 little ducks went out to play”! I would recommend Ellis lake to anyone in the area! Bring some bread crumbs for the ducks, and enjoy a leisurely springtime walk!
